Hackers stole $8.8 million in digital currencies in January

According to the results of the first month of 2023, digital currencies for a total amount of up to $8.8 million became the prey of cybercriminals. PeckShield analysts came to this conclusion.

They found that more than 30% of the stolen funds were sent to the wallets of the Tornado Cash mixer.

Recall that this service came under US sanctions last year. The US authorities have accused its developers of laundering criminal proceeds and serving users who are blacklisted by the Treasury.

In addition to Tornado Cash, hackers transferred funds to the Fixedfloat and SideShift platforms. In January, the largest attack was on the LendHub DeFi protocol used for crypto lending.

The criminals were able to steal tokens totaling up to $6 million. In addition, hackers hacked ThoreumFinance, MidasCapitalxyz, Omniestategroup and Mycelium.

The researchers note that at the beginning of 2023, 14 fewer attacks were recorded than in January last year. Then cybercriminals managed to steal more than $121.4 million.

According to the results of the entire last year, $3.4 billion worth of digital assets became the prey of hackers.
