Lawyers for Sam Bankman-Freed said there was an attempted attack on his parents’ home. According to Reuters, lawyers filed a complaint with the court, alleging that three men drove a car into a metal fence near the house where the founder of the FTX crypto exchange is under house arrest. The lawyers did not specify the exact date and time of the incident, saying only that it was recently, writes RBC Crypto.
In a filing in federal court on Jan. 19, Bankman-Fried’s attorneys Mark Cohen and Christian Everdell allege that after hitting the guardrail, three men got out of the car and told a security guard, “You can’t stop us.” The unidentified men then got into the car and drove off, the agency reports.
The lawsuit says the incident “highlighted the security risks” faced by the founder of FTX and the people who make it possible for Bankman-Freed to attend court.
The former head of the FTX crypto exchange faces federal charges of conspiracy and fraud, as well as illegal use of FTX client funds to support his Alameda Research hedge fund, purchase luxury real estate and multimillion-dollar political donations.
While other former executives from the FTX group pleaded guilty, Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty in court. He was released on $250 million bail and is under house arrest at his parents’ home in California.
According to the agency, lawyers reported the hit-and-run incident after demands from major media outlets to release the names of two people who became Bankman-Freed’s guarantors along with his parents. One of them agreed to pay $500,000 and the other $200,000 if the former head of FTX did not appear in court.
Prosecutors did not comment on whether or not to disclose the identities of the guarantors, Bankman-Fried’s lawyers wrote in a statement. A spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan declined to comment.
